Blk Ark: The Impossible Manifestation is a multimodal project by CultureHub Resident Artist Cat Mahari consisting of a live performance, filmed community co-created sound score, and digital publication. It is inspired by Ẹsẹ̀ntáyé, meaning “touch the feet to the earth”, a Yoruba ceremony wherein a baby’s destiny is revealed. In embodiment of Hip Hop’s wildstyle, we choose a destiny of marronage, which is a fugitive movement from bondage and the creation of an alternative world - a journey to the outside. James Baldwin was once accused of courting anarchy and replied, “...disorder was a necessary aspect of his life... He could not afford to be tamed.” Blk Ark centers the refusal to be tamed and embraces the demand of “disorder” for Blk liberation. As Assata Shakur stated, “Power concedes nothing without demand.”

This work crosses temporal logics utilizing play and anarcho-choreographic Hip Hop as a co-conspirator. Blk Ark invites audiences to ask themselves, “Are they free?” and allow their answer to drive them as they experience this installation and performance.

CultureHub Resident Artist Cat Mahari collaborates with Jarius “ManofGod” King focused on performance and Elizabeth “Kerberus” Seonwoo focused on new media integration to create Blk Ark: the impossible manifestation.

Jarius King is a Black Arts performing artist and instructor. A member of Rhythm Attack (Hong Kong) from 2006-2020 and a current member of Motion Disorderz (USA), King draws on his experiences with music, dance, martial arts, and creative movement to inform his practice and instruction. He is co-founder of "Breakin' The Law: International Festival of Urban Movement” (2004-2014) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. King is also a professional DJ and event MC; known as King G.N.S. (pronounced "Genius").

Kereberus is an expressive movement and visual artist who explores many different materials and mediums, from physical art forms such as dance as a member of the Krump collective Chi-Buck, to photography and videography, to virtual platforms and 3D graphic animations. Questions of intimacy, consent, and dynamics of power in gender ideation inform much of her current processes. A graduate of Chicago Art Institute Seonwoo is also a 2022 awardee of the 3Arts Make a Wave Artist Award.

Mahari’s practice is built from a richly layered body history, stemming from an archive of research, physical training and intent to manifest an intellectual, material and informal legacy of Blk liberation through documentation. By examining personal marks and socio-genealogical maps, she explores inner and outer environments. mahari is a culture bearer of Hip Hop and House; former member of the Krump family Gool, with a BFA in dance performance from the Conservatory of Music & Dance at the University of Missouri - Kansas City and M.A. in performance, practice, and research from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. mahari works in live performance, film, new media technologies, textile based visual art, and whatever gets the job done to propel Blk liberation.
